The Luminox Navy SEAL watch is the timepiece that made Luminox famous. In 1993, the Assistant RDT&E officer for the Navy SEALs, Nick North, was asked to seek a more dependable watch for night missions and found the solution in Luminox. He worked with founder, Barry Cohen to develop a watch specifically for them and a revolution was born. 20 years later the SEALs approached Luminox again and we were the only model to pass all rigorous tests. The result was the Authorized for Navy Use (ANU) watch provided to new graduates of the Basic Underwater Demolition SEALs (BUD/S) training.

After Luminox provided watches to the Navy SEALs, Luminox was approached by the US Air Force pilots flying the F-117 Nighthawk fighter jet in 1999 to develop a watch for these pilots. Luminox then contacted Lockheed Martin which turned to an exclusive arrangement to produce Lockheed Martin timepieces. Utilizing aircraft-inspired details, the watches of the Luminox AIR series pay tribute to some of the most remarkable strategic aircraft in aviation history. Created under official and exclusive worldwide license with Lockheed Martin, the Luminox Air collection includes the F-117 Nighthawk, F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning II, the vintage inspired P-38 Lightning and the Limited Edition SR-71 Blackbird
Designed for Space and with input from test pilots and future astronauts, the SPACE Series timepieces are suitable for adventure in space, and on earth. Trusted and requested by elite forces around the globe, Luminox has earned a reputation for toughness, durability and visibility in all light conditions, making it the perfect space timepiece.
Like many other American success stories, Luminox came from a forward thinking individual, Barry Cohen, a watch industry veteran, who came across a Swiss self-powered illumination system and knew that it would make watches more visible and easier to read in low or no light situations. Driven by the commitment to offer cutting-edge luminescence and readability in its line of high-performance sports watches, Luminox was born with ‘Lumi’ in Latin for light while Nox in Latin for night. Since then, we refer to the illumination technology in the Luminox watches as the Luminox Light Technology (LLT).
The officer in charge of procurement for the Navy SEALs, Nick North, was asked to seek a more dependable watch for night missions and found the solution at a trade show where he discovered Luminox. He worked with Barry Cohen to develop a watch specifically for them and the Navy SEAL watch was born. “As a research, development, test, and evaluation officer for the Navy SEALs I was asked to find a dependable watch for night missions. After testing a variety of brands in the most arduous conditions, Luminox was the only one still functioning at the end of the evaluation.” Nick North, Navy SEAL (Retired). The Luminox 3001 Original Navy SEAL was born. After Luminox provided watches to the SEALs, more elite units from Special Forces, police force and air force commissioned to have watches made by Luminox. Since then Luminox watches have always been essential equipment. If watch is durable enough for the world's toughest elite forces, it will stand up to any other rugged outdoor use.
Ronnie and Andre Bernheim, owners of the Swiss watch manufacturer Mondaine Watch Ltd acquired 50% of the Luminox company shares. Their vast experience and network in global brand building and manufacturing was integral to bring the brand forward. The launch of the Navy SEAL Colormark 3051 Series - the evolution of the original Navy SEAL timepieces – saw the use of Carbon Compound for its watches which made them stronger and lighter. This high-tech material is frequently used in racing cars, airplanes and spaceships because of its perfect combination of light weight, strength and durability. Carbon Compound does not get hot in warm temperatures or cold in cold climates and, for undercover missions, the matte finish material is also an important benefit.
Luminox partners with former counter terrorism expert and undersea explorer, Scott Cassell. Cassell is a dive professional and relies on Luminox watches as part of his essential diving gear. As a man with high ideals, he is steadfastly committed to his missions, with one clear goal - to protect the world’s oceans and their inhabitants.
Luminox initiates the Luminox Special Operations Challenge (LSOC) to honoring its heritage with the Navy SEALs. Luminox partners with retired Navy SEALs to offer civilians the chance to train like a Navy SEAL for a day or take part in challenges – an adventurous day that combines high adrenaline action as well as great fun. This includes Tough Viking, an obstacle race designed together with the Swedish elite maritime unit, to provide sports and outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to push their limits and test our watches under extreme conditions.
Luminox becomes an official licensing partner of the Navy SEALs. “It is an absolute honor to have an ongoing relationship with the SEALs since 1992, and to be selected by U.S. Navy SEAL Commanders to design and supply watches for some of the most elite and respected Special Forces in the world. It is particularly exciting that two generations of SEALs, first in 1992 and again in 2013, arrived at the same conclusion and chose Luminox as their watch of choice. Becoming their official watch licensee formalizes this ongoing relationship,” say Luminox owners. Mondaine Watch Ltd purchases remaining Luminox shares to own 100% of the brand.
