The fourth station of the Luminox Code Red Survival Course simulated search and rescue mission in a blazing fire. My team mates and I managed to experience the intense process of gearing up in firefighter clothing as well as to extinguish a burning vehicle within a time limit where #everyseondcounts. This could be a matter of life and death for a victim stuck in a burning car. The first and foremost important component to battle a fire in a life threatening situation is the firefighter’s uniform. A firefighter’s uniform is called Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), designed to protect them against...

The third station of the Luminox Code Red Survival Course simulated a rubble situation. We were taught extrication skills to rescue victims from a dangerous situation. This meant that participants had to deal hands-on with heavy duty equipment such as chainsaws, metal cutter and rock drill. These equipment were often used during the missions by MISAR when victims were trapped. , It helped to deform the heavy or bulky structures and allowed for the safe removal of the victims in rescue missions. One lesson that I learnt was to have a decisive mind during extrication to minimize injury to the...

The second station of the Luminox Code Red Survival Course simulated a rescue mission which involved abseiling down a building and lifting a victim on the rescue stretcher to a helicopter. This simulation allowed me to learn the basic techniques of abseiling down the rope and have the essential knowledge on how to operate such equipment.. Every participant had to dress in harness, wear gloves and a helmet, while an instructor gave a safety briefing on the importance of a secured carabiner and demonstrated a basic stance or brake hand. Abseiling for a beginner like me was a frightening experience...

The first station simulated a search and rescue mission that located a victim trapped beneath the collapsed building debris. Such scenarios would happen in countries with poor building materials or in an earthquake situation where buildings would collapse. The Malaysian International Search and Rescue (MISAR) would deploy their highly trained code red team for such life and death situations where volunteers would have to be concerned about falling debris and getting stuck under a rubble. At the Luminox Code Red Survival Course, the other participants and I were introduced to ResQ17, a sensor system device that would detect carbon dioxide...
